My Powell: A Look at Powell's Locally Run Community App

Staying connected starts with knowing where to look.

MyPowell is a free, locally administered community app for Powell, Ohio residents, with message boards, official announcements and local business offers, according to its App Store and Google Play listings and website.

When you are new to a town, one of the hardest things is learning where to hear what is going on: who to ask about a lost dog, where to find a reliable plumber, when the city has an announcement. Powell has a tool aimed at exactly that, and I wanted to take a careful look at what it says about itself.

A note on sources: I tried to read a Delaware Source article about this app but could not open it, so this post is built only from the app's own website and its App Store and Google Play listings, which I opened directly. Those are the developer's own descriptions, not independent reviews, and I have said so wherever it matters.

What Is the MyPowell App?

According to the My Powell website, My Powell is a "private social media platform designed and administered for the sole benefit of Powell area residents." The site says participants are vetted for residency and that the app has no "algorithms." The Apple App Store listing describes it as "a locally-administered social media platform designed for the sole benefit of residents and visitors of Powell, Ohio."

What Features Does It List?

The website lists these features:

  • Message boards and chats

  • Announcements from the city, the local school board and other officials

  • Interest groups

  • Lost-and-found posts

  • Items for sale

  • Business listings and "exclusive offers" from verified local businesses

The Google Play listing adds that the app includes local weather, and that it "contains ads."

Who Runs It?

The website says, "Our app administrators live in Powell," without naming them. The footer credits "Powered by BusyBloc Community App Management System" and Common Area, LLC. The App Store lists the developer as Common-Area LLC, doing business as BusyBloc, and Google Play lists Common-Area LLC of Akron, Ohio. I did not find a launch date or release history on the website.

Is It Free, and Where Can You Get It?

The App Store lists the app as free, in the Social Networking category, rated 13+, and requiring iOS or iPadOS 15.0 or later. Google Play shows the app as recently updated, with 100-plus downloads, rated 12+. The website links to both stores.

What Do the Listings Say About Privacy?

The two listings describe data differently, so it is worth reading both. The App Store privacy label says the developer does not collect any data from the app, and notes this is unverified by Apple. Google Play's data safety section says no data is shared with third parties, that location and personal information may be collected, that data is encrypted in transit and that users can request deletion.

I am not drawing conclusions from that. If privacy matters to you, read each store's full listing and the developer's policy before signing up.

How Could a Newcomer Use It?

If you are considering Powell or have just moved, an app like this could be one way to follow official announcements and find local businesses. I would pair it with the City of Powell's own channels and local news so you hear from more than one source.

As with any community platform, the experience depends on who participates and how it is moderated, and the listings do not describe either in detail.

What Do the Listings Not Say?

They do not give a launch date, a count of residents using the app or an independent review of how well it works. I will not guess at any of that. The App Store listing shows only three ratings, which is too few to say much.
